Some common configurations
Straight pier "L" pier (left or right) "T" pier
Double "L" 
"L" with finger "U" pier (left or right)
Quadruple LTF double U platformed triple return and laterally frampamatized combo pier-o-rama (this is the left version of course).
While virtually any configuration of pier can be built, there's one rule of thumb. Each section must attach via its end, not its side. So it's possible to do this...
