Some common configurations

Straight pier
Lef L pier T pier
Straight pier
"L" pier (left or right)
"T" pier

 

Right double L pier L with finger right U pier
Double "L"
"L" with finger
"U" (left or right)
Note that the U can start from anywhere along the side of a section

 

Escher Pier
Quadruple LTF double U platformed triple return and lateralized straight pier

While virtually any configuration of pier can be built, there's one rule of thumb. Each section must attach via its end, not its side. So it's possible to do this...
